Little-Big Adventure Race #1 - From Dad
Saturday, April 26, 2008
What an awesome race! We had a blast. Ben paired up with me and Thing1 paired up with Ms. D. Dolph & Holly and Bob came to cheer us on. It was VERY nice of them. We saw Frank and his son at the race, too. The weather was awesome - mid-70’s and clear.
The race was well volunteered and organized. We started in a mad scramble. I was still not feeling well from a cold this week, but was still bummed that we (Thing2 & I) finished the canoe in 4th place. Thing1 & Ms. D did a couple loops on the lake and had a great laugh backing into the dock in last place.
The bike race was more technical than I expected for the kids. We were close to #3 team and closing in. Each time they would accelerate. Finally, the dad looked back at us and crashed into the son taking both down in a pile. Never saw them again. Folks behind us almost caught up while we asked if they needed help. Thing1 & Ms. D had a good ride. Thing1 crashed once but they passed a number of bikers.
At the run we drank water while resting and walking up the steep hill to the boat ramp. #4 was close behind us, but once we started running - never saw them again. Our first 1.5 mile run and Thing2 did great. He complained a few times during the ride & bike but he had fun and was happy to get 3rd. Thing1 crashed during the run and Ms. D asked if he wanted to cry or run. He popped up and said run. She meant it nice, but he took it as an encouragement to go. They passed more folks during the run and finished respectfully.
Afterwards, we waited a HUGE amount of time for the awards and raffle. A RunningKids.net tradition is a massive wait to get awards. We finished at 11:00, they made the call to gather folks for the awards at 12:22 and the thing was finally over after 1:00.
We had a lot of fun anyway and will definitely be back for another race!
Both teams at the finish line. Tired and happy in the same picture.
